Internationalization and localization are the means to adopt software to functioning in different languages and local formats (e.g. numeric data, dates, measurements units, names and so on).
Internationalization (i18n)
Internationalization is a process of design and preparation of applications, web sites and databases that supports various national standards. Internationalization does not involve the translation of the application resources into different languages; it only provides application with means of supporting different locales. As the result you will get the generalized application code that does not depend upon the local data representation. Regardless the application internationalization includes three main components:
- Data Component is a source and a provider of translated resources
- Localization component is a set of rules of data and text representation, calendars and time display, measurement units and other properties for each localization region
- User Interface component deals with aspects of display and accessibility of localized data. It includes text fragmenting, used space restrictions, fonts etc.
Localization (L10n)
This is the very process of supplying the data in the regions language and definition of numeric and text data formats accordingly to specifications of selected region.
